Integrated Dental Holdings
Our client, Dr Johann Archer, had a simple brief: “Design me the best looking new Dental Practice”.
And the he gave us free reign.
We designed a modern, multi facetted building situated on a busy intersection in Olympia, Windhoek. The corner erf provided access and visibility from 2 busy roads and that gave us even more design opportunities.
Concrete, steel, aluminium and tinted glass were used.
3 distinct blocks make up the whole:
A dark charcoal base with
a brilliant white block on top of it, punctured with large glazed areas and then
the aluminium cladded back section.
The building consists of the following:
Basement with staff parking and services
Ground floor with all the public areas – reception, waiting area, dental rooms, patient ablutions, X ray and sterilization rooms.
First floor houses the administration areas, a large boardroom/ training facility and the laboratory.
The building is open to the street on 2 sides and a pond wrapping around the front edge of the building keep intruders away from the walls in a passive manner.
The plan is easily legible to the users of the building and the entire building communicates with the streets it faces. The building has a presence without being obnoxious, modern without the possibility of being dated in a couple of years.
The interior is light and full of fun. Splashes of lime colour the interior. The walls are adorned with large black and white canvas prints of headshots of all staff members. Colourful canvas prints are suspended behind the reception area to welcome patients but also to screen the passage at the back.
One entire wall in each dental room has wallpaper with a larger than life photograph of a smiling animal. All done to ensure patients feel at ease and to guarantee a pleasant visit to the dentist!
