Africa Safari Lodge

Africa Safari Lodge opened its doors and the end of July 2012. It is situated 25km from Mariental on the road to Maltahoë.

The lodge is the brainchild of Johann Archer and Paul Malan. They commissioned us to design a lodge to compliment their game farming concern – Africa Game Bomas.

The project consists of 16 chalets and 4 luxury chalets, all overlooking a waterhole. The chalets are connected to the main areas with a footpath – cars are left at the parking area close to reception.

The public areas were planned around a central courtyard with the restaurant, bar, spa, swimming pool and conference facilities all situated around this courtyard. Covered stoeps connect all the spaces and ensure that guests can enjoy the sweeping views from everywhere.

And it is exactly these sweeping views that we knew we had to frame with our design. One enters the main complex walking underneath 5 galvanised water tanks suspended above with the main vista falling open in front of you.

The architecture was kept simple to allow the views and the environment to take preference. Exposed red brick walls echo the red dune sand found in the area. Other materials used are steel, galvanised steel, grey cement screeded floors and corrugated sheeting.

The landscaping was kept simple with the use of lavender, rosemary and other low maintenance planting with patches of lawn in-between. 4 large trees mark the edges of the first courtyard.

A red brick boma provides the ideal place for sundowners around a fire, also overlooking the waterhole in the distance. This fire forms the heart of the courtyards.

The interiors were done in an eclectic manner – we wanted people to feel right at home and able to put their feet up. Natural materials and muted colours were used with slashes of brighter colours on the large round lampshades.

We wanted an experience of understated luxury, thick down duvets and large fluffy white towels with quality crockery and cutlery – all mixed in with grey cement floors and open white trusses – airy and light interiors with texture provided by the soft furnishings.
